Start With Food

Foods that support a sharper mind

Nutrition research often points to a few food groups when it comes to healthy brain function. None of these is a cure, but together they make a good daily foundation.

🫐

Berries

Blueberries and other deeply colored berries are rich in antioxidants that help protect cells from everyday oxidative stress.

🐟

Fatty fish

Salmon, sardines and trout supply DHA, an omega-3 fat that is a building block of brain tissue.

🥚

Eggs

Egg yolks are one of the best food sources of choline, a nutrient the body uses to make memory-related messengers.

🥬

Leafy greens

Spinach, kale and arugula provide folate and other B vitamins that support normal nerve function.

🌰

Walnuts and seeds

A handful of walnuts, flax or pumpkin seeds adds healthy fats, vitamin E and minerals to the day.

🍵

Green tea

A gentle, steady source of caffeine paired with L-theanine, which many people find smooths out the jitters.

Lifestyle matters just as much: regular sleep, daily movement, hydration and managing stress all play a part in how clearly you think.

Brain Smoothie

Makes 1 large glass · 5 minutes · no cooking

Ingredients

  • 1 cup frozen blueberries
  • 1/2 ripe banana
  • 1 handful fresh spinach
  • 1/4 cup walnuts
  • 1 tablespoon ground flaxseed
  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk (or milk of your choice)
  • 1 teaspoon raw cacao powder (optional)

Directions

  1. Add the almond milk to the blender first, then the spinach, banana, walnuts and flaxseed.
  2. Add the frozen blueberries and cacao on top.
  3. Blend on high for 45 to 60 seconds until smooth, adding a splash more liquid if it is too thick.
  4. Pour and enjoy right away, ideally in the morning or before a long work session.

Allergic to nuts? Swap the walnuts for pumpkin seeds. If you take a blood thinner, keep your leafy greens consistent from day to day and ask your doctor about any big changes.
